FAQ

What is Profhilo®?

Profhilo® is a unique injectable made of a high concentration of a carbohydrate called hyaluron that is naturally present in the skin but declines with age. It promotes skin hydration and collagen formation. Profhilo® has a unique formulation which is free of additives. Its’ consistency is like runny honey, as such that allows it to evenly spread through the skin tissues and underlying structures forming a hydrating layer as well as stimulating cell production including collagen and elastin.

What is it used for?

Unlike other anti-ageing injectables, Profhilo® uses HA which is used to treat skin laxity on the face, neck, hands and decolletage, helping to remodel ageing, sagging and crepey skin. It hydrates and firms the skin and is shown to have a stimulatory effect on the cells producing collagen and elastin to help tighten, lift the skin and improve skin quality to give it a more youthful look. The results of Profhilo® treatments can last up to 6-9 months, however, this may vary by patient and depends on skin type and age. Treatment stimulates new collagen and elastin cells, and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatment involves placing the product under the skin using a fine needle at points which are chosen to ensure safety and maximise the lifting action of the product. Profhilo® spreads evenly throughout the surrounding tissues to hydrate and stimulate the collagen and elastin production. For a result, you are required to have 2 treatments on the face or neck 3-5 weeks apart; or 3 treatments on the hands and décolletage, also 3-5 weeks apart. After a 6 to 9 month period or when you begin to see the treatment’s effects wearing away, then you can top up treatments if you wish to continue. The Profhilo® treatment can work independently as a treatment on its own or in combination with other cosmetic treatments.

Who should not have Profhilo®?

Those previously allergic to hyaluronan; anaphylaxis reaction to bee-stings, pregnant or breast-feeding; with permanent fillers or facial implants; unwell with a cold, sinusitis or facial infection; prior keloid scarring; planned dental treatment in a month or flying overseas in under four days. It is best avoided if you have had a recent vaccination. Caution is needed in those with autoimmune disorders.

What about combining with other cosmetic treatments?

You can use Profhilo® with other cosmetic treatments, but we advise no botulinum toxin for two weeks prior. No microdermabrasion, chemical peel, IPL for 1–2 weeks pre or post treatment. Avoid fractional resurfacing 4 weeks pre and post Profhilo® treatment.

What are the rare side effects?

This treatment is relatively unproblematic and well tolerated. Allergy is unlikely, as Profhilo® is free from synthetic chemicals, but it is still a possibility and may result in swelling redness or hard lumps. This is treated by dissolving the Profhilo with an enzyme. As the skin barrier is breached during placement, there is a rare risk of infection which may require antibiotics. It is extremely unlikely that vascular occlusion will occur due to the placement sites of the product. However, it remains a possibility that Profhilo® may inadvertently enter a vessel which can cause skin damage and scarring unless treated by dissolving enzyme which removes all filler. With other fillers, there have been extremely rare reports of blindness or stroke, with treatment of the nose and between the eyes carrying a higher risk and this remains a possible risk with this treatment.

Can I have Profhilo® treatment if I have had or planning to have a Covid-19 vaccination?

Profhilo® treatment and Covid-19 vaccination need to be at least 2 weeks apart.
